Children to Plant Wildflowers at Oak Mountain State Park

Birmingham, Ala. ---- Fifth grade students from Trace Crossings Elementary School will be founding members of the Junior Friends of Oak Mountain as they begin a wildflower planting on Sat., Nov. 8. The children will begin at 8:30 am and expect to conclude at 1 pm at Oak Mountain State Park. They will meet just inside the main gate at the visitors center.

"We are so excited to see how much this new generation loves this state park. The children are so enthusiastic and willing to help make it beautiful. These are the future caretakers of Oak Mountain and all its wonders," said Scott Stone, president of Friends of Oak Mountain.

The newly formed Junior Friends of Oak Mountain will work with the adult group to help park officials enhance and preserve the park. The wildflower project will help prevent roadside erosion and add a beautiful covering of flowers next year. The children will be rewarded with a guided hike, free t-shirts and lunch.

The Friends of Oak Mountain is a group of volunteers composed primarily of user groups who enjoy the park, such as mountain bikers, golfers, horse riders, hikers and bird-watchers. Their mission is to help the state enhance the park and to work as an advisory committee to state officials. Visit www.oakmountainfriends.org for more information.
